What’s On: 16-18th September

This weekend offers some entertaining MMA bouts across different organisations, but the world of combat sports turns its main attention to the trilogy of Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin. Here’s more about what’s on offer this weekend.

UFC Fight Night: Sandhagen vs Yadong

After last week’s drama surrounding UFC 279 with Khamzat missing weight, backstage fights, and a new card, this week’s card seems a tad underwhelming. The main card is topped by Cory Sandhagen – presumably of some Scandinavian descent – taking on Yadong Song from China. China recently got a champion in ONE Championship in Tang Kai. The two bantamweights will no doubt be fighting for a future title contention spot. Sandhagen comes off two losses, one of which was to T.J. Dillashaw by split decision and the most recent to Petr Yan by unanimous decision. Sandhagen is a clever fighter, not only because he holds a degree in psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder, but because he reads the game well. 9 out of his 14 wins are by KO or submission. He has learned to control the ground game quite well, although his background is in kickboxing.

Yadong is not to be underestimated, however, having practised martial arts since he was 9 and making his professional MMA debut just before his 16th birthday. On his resume, he has a recent win over Marlon Moraes and comes off a three-win streak. The odds have Sandhagen up, and as the #4 ranked bantamweight it is to be expected. His fights are entertaining and I would certainly pick him for the win.

Overall, a Fight Night card will never be as exciting as a UFC PPV. We have a couple more before UFC 280 on October 22nd – but just because the names aren’t as big it doesn’t mean the fights won’t be entertaining.

CANELO VS GGG

They have met twice: the first time ended in a draw, the second with Canelo walking away with the W. Triple G is back for vengeance, while Canelo vows to retire Golovkin with a KO. Golovkin’s coach, Jonathan Banks, says Canelo has become a stalker since their last fight. In other words, he will patiently walk toward GGG until he is in range. This bodes well for Triple G who is a master at creating a sense of panic in his opponents, pushing them to the ropes where he can apply pressure and devastating blows. The style match-up bodes well for an exhilarating fight.

In 24 rounds, Canelo hasn’t been able to stop GGG which also speaks in favour of Triple G. Canelo is Triple G’s only loss and he comes off a win in April this year against Ryota Murata, while Canelo just lost against Bivol, albeit in a heavier weight class. The 12-round fight in Las Vegas will be a fight for the undisputed middleweight title.

The fight can be watched on DAZN.

COMBATE GLOBAL

For those who can’t wait to watch combat sports action, the premier Latin American MMA promotion, Combate Global, has announced a five-bout MMA fight card headlined by a bantamweight (135 pounds) main event between Miguel “Iron Mike” Gonzalez (5-1) and Edir “Belico” Terry (8-4), live tonight on television in the U.S. on Univision (12 a.m. ET/PT) and TUDN (12 a.m. ET/9 p.m. PT), from Miami, Florida.
